FAQs
What kind of license do I need?
We are open to any pilot with at least a Private Pilot’s License (PPL). We cannot provide primary instruction to student pilots, however there are other flight schools at KHEF that can provide initial pilot training.
Once you are a member, you can work with CFIs in the club to complete additional training such as Instrument Rating time.
Do I need other training to fly with you?
Our home airport KHEF resides within the DC Special Flight Rules Area (SFRA), and operating in the SFRA requires specific training, which can be found here.
The Cessna 182 also requires a high-performance endorsement. If you don’t already have one, don’t worry, as this is part of our checkout process.
When can I fly?
As a member, you can fly whenever you want, night or day, provided you possess the appropriate certification and are current for your intended flight.
How do I reserve the plane?
The club manages reservations through AircraftClubs, with the following policies to promote courtesy and encourage flying:
-
Limit 5 reservations per member at any given time. This is a scheduling software limit, however if the plane is available, then same-day flights (with club notification) are encouraged even if the member has reached the 5-reservation limit.
-
Limit weekend reservations to a total of 3
-
Backup reservations are allowed beyond the 5-reservation limit.
-
Members should avoid last-minute cancellations as much as possible.
Can I take the plane for a weekend or longer trip?
Yes! We encourage our members to use the plane often, and one of the joys of flying in a club is the ability to take the plane beyond the typical timeframe allowed by a flight school.
Our club charges a consistent rate based on tach time, and so weekends or overnight reservations don’t incur additional cost. However, weekends are usually in higher demand, and so we ask our members to respect each other by reserving the aircraft when they intend to actually use it.
